Search
Engines
|
| A search engine is a
database of websites.
Each search engine looks for the occurences of the words you enter in
its
list of websites. A search engine does not search the whole Internet,
only
the sites that have been registered with it.
Some search engines will
let you limit
your search to media types (sound files, images, etc.), a geographic
area,
or content type (websites, discussion lists archives, reviewed
websites,
etc.). Other search engines offer premium contents for a fee.
Also, most search engines
often have a
help section explaining how to narrow down your searches. This involves
using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT), the "+" and "-" signs, and
phrase
searching.

Subject
Guides
|
| Subject guides involve
people who select
and review websites. They are organized by topics, going from broad to
specific. The subject categories can follow standardized schemes, like
the Dewey Decimal Classification, or they can be original in-house
systems.
Most of these guides offer
keyword search
capabilities. Like search engines, you can't search the whole Internet
but only one database.

Metasearch
Engines
|
| A metasearch engine allows
you to broadcast
one search query to many individual search engines. It is the
closest
you will ever get to be able to search the whole Internet.
Metasearch engine will
often offer various
search possibilities, like searching discussion lists archives or
browse
subject guides. You may also be offered the possibility to select which
search engines you want to searched, how fast you want a response, or
select
the type of material you want to retrieve (eg. images, sound files,
etc.)
Also, some metasearch
engines offer the
possibility of narrowing down your searches by using Boolean
operators
(AND, OR, NOT), the "+" and "-" signs, and phrase searching. Check the
"Help" sections of each site.
